From the Archives: Princess Potty Mouth

I realized I never blogged this one: from May 30, 2007.

At the pool this afternoon, Helen was playing with Marley, the teenage girl that lives down the street (we were actually trying to get Marley to teach Alice how to swim, since I can’t get in the pool for another week, but Alice wasn’t participating). Anyway. Marley got up because the phone was for her, and Helen asked, “Where’s Marley?” I teased her that Marley had left since Helen wouldn’t go to the deep end with her, and Helen said, “Well, F***.”

In front of my mother.

With exactly the same inflection I used this morning when I dropped something on my foot in the laundry room. Helen was downstairs and out of earshot, or so I thought.

Charming.

I got up close and personal and said, “I’m sorry, what was that? What did you just say?”

She looked at me. She looked at my mother. She looked back at me… “I said… ‘duck’….?”

“Um, no, I’m pretty sure that’s not what you said.”

She looked down, said, “I’m sorry,” and gave me a hug.

I said, “That’s okay. Just be careful, OK, kiddo?” and dropped it.

Ai yi yi.

(I will admit that when it happened my instinctive reaction was one of pride that she had used the word properly and in context, and then a split-second later I was deriding myself for being proud of my not-yet-five-year-old for dropping the F-bomb.)

Button for Virtual Quilting Bee I’m in…

I’m in an online quilting bee on Flickr that started this month, and I designed a button for us to use. I need to get Jerry’s help embedding it in my sidebar (which is SO out of date, but I digress)… But here’s the code for them to use. Just copy and paste the following html onto your website (just take out all of the line breaks but don’t add spaces — I couldn’t get the code to display without turning to the links it’s coding for. Tried everything I could think of. What can I say? I’m an artist, not a computer geek):

Here’s what the button looks like:

House Arrest

Wonky Log Cabins so far

Stomach Flu hit our house this week. I won’t bore you with the details about THAT, but while the girls have been in miserable lethargic little heaps watching Disney Movie Marathons, I’ve been playing on the sewing machine (and occasionally cleaning up a little bit, but I think I’ve made more of a mess than I’ve conquered).

I’ve made 6 of these pretty little blocks this week, and they’re SO fun and fast to do! 🙂 I can definitely see an addiction starting. They appeal to my funky-shapes-within-a-rigid-structure side — I ALWAYS react to quilts made this way, and yet I’ve never actually made one.

Trying to decide if I’ll keep making big blocks like this or if I’ll start making a bunch of ’em in different sizes just to keep it interesting. I think I may go with different sizes and see what happens. They may end up together, they may not.

In any case, the pile of bright fabrics all over the floor in here is probably a fire hazard.
